Welcome to Exploring Martinsville and Henry County. This blog has been developed to accompany the exhibit Exploring Virginia at the Virginia Museum of Natural History. When visiting Exploring Virginia, you can learn about some of the early European explorers who helped describe the geography of Virginia and eastern North America. You can also learn how archaeologists explore the past. Explorers often wrote journals during their voyages but with the proper techniques, the archaeological record can tell us much more about the past than just can be found in the written record. Exploring Martinsville and Henry County will help you explore more of this area and its past. While we will focus our posts on historic buildings and archaeological sites, we will occasionally toss in a natural area where you can explore the land, the plants, and the animals around us.

Special thanks to Simone Morris who took the photographs and drafted the text for most of the blog posts that will appear over the next year.
